Subtraction Quiz
is shared by Garry Clark* of Armidale, Australia screenshot of the project (inactive buttons) |
To use this project, you need the free MicroWorlds Web Player, but you do not need to know anything about MicroWorlds. Solve three subtraction problems in each quiz. You may use Base 10 Blocks to help you. This screenshot shows how the blocks can be used to solve the third problem (43 - 27). First the student clicked 4 times on the 10 block and 3 times on the unit (one) block. Then the student clicked the "Trade_Ten" button. You can see the result in the screenshot: one 10 block was instantly traded for ten unit blocks, so now there are three 10 blocks and 13 unit blocks. Now the student will click 7 times on the "Remove_Unit" button and twice on the "Remove_Ten" buttons to subtract 27 from 43. Then the student will enter the answer. When all three problems are solved, the student can check the answers with the "Check" button. |
__________ * Garry Clark, a lecturer at the University of New England's School of Education in Armidale, Australia, has put together a CD of 93 stimulating mathematical activities which help develop math concepts and strategies along with math skills. Most of these activities are presented in the same spirit of open-ended exploration that we Math Cats love so much! We highly recommend this CD.
