December 4, 2004 Thank you math cats for saving my life, in class. I don't like school. In our class we got a grant. We bought lots of stuff. My favorite thing is the Labtops. We have 18 of them. This is how you saved my life. We worked on mathcats the whole hour of math class. It was so much fun. My teacher loves it so much that we have did it 2 times. Thank you for making mathcats. I love mathcats. It is a great thing to do on a rainy day. The best thing about is you learn new things. Thank You!!!

| 3/11/04 Do you know how to make a "Durian" (a kind of fruit found at Malaysia) with only using triangle? The last question, what is the meaning of ODD? Christina Wow, I don't think we can make a Durian unless we see a picture of it. But we could probably make a picture of anything using just triangle shapes... if we use our imagination a little bit. A number that is odd cannot be divided evenly into two groups. One item would be left over. If you have 9 pencils and you share them between two friends, they would each have four pencils, and one would be left over. So 9 is an odd number. Any number that ends in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 is an odd number.

The idea of the game is try to get away from the dog and jump on the wall at the very end of the level and there should be at least 5 levels. Lyndsey T. Thanks for the idea! Studying hard is one part of getting good at math. Loving math is another part. There is one more part: understanding math. It doesn't do much good to practice doing all the steps to solve a problem if you don't really understand what you are doing. Do you understand why you are doing what you are doing in math? I like to set up problems with simple numbers first and draw a picture of what I am doing, to make sure that I understand the steps, and then I can understand harder problems better. Good luck!

| 3/2/04 I learned about mathcats.com from another teacher on my listserve for third grade teachers. I have since shared it with the other third grade teachers in my district. I am looking for ideas on ways to teach math to my third graders. We are also in the process of revising our math curriculum and I need suggested activities so I am looking specifically for those ideas. Thanks for all your help. I am really pressed for time, so it is helpful to know of specific sites which are easy to get to and have the information I need. I think your website is one of the best I have seen, and believe you me, I have seen a lot.

You can print out pictures you make at Math Cats if you do a screen capture (with the PrtSc key on a PC) and then paste the screenshot into a graphics program such as Paint. Then you can crop the picture to keep the part you want. We will be posting a page of other good math sites soon.

I found it doing a google search looking for a multiplication facts game that my third grader could play for practice as an alternative to the regular flash cards. The first time on, we right away made a set of your flash cards. We like how they are self checking, so we have the option to work on them together or for her to do them on her own. Also we like the way we can also use them for division practice. My third grade daughter (8 years old) is quite interested in math ands picks it up amazingly quickly. I want to encourage her to keep that up any we can! We "talk math" all the time at our house. My boys (13 and 14 years old) are both in JrHi and both do well in math. It's mostly my daughter who uses the site. She loves cats and math so she went right for this. She is bored by her school math and is enjoying the extra challenge of this site. We love the graphics. Thanks for all the extras that make it more attractive and fun. I would like to see a fact practice game for both addition/subtraction and multiplication/division that can be played on line. Maybe there's one there and we just haven't found it yet. Like I said we are new to the site, we just found it 3 days ago. Thanks for a great site.

My math teacher won't let us download anything on the computer that's why I wrote this message to ask you if you could make the math games without using the plug? That way anybody could play the games and a lot more people would visit this site.

I realize that at a lot of schools it's a problem about downloading things. I hope if you have Internet at home that you can at least use the plug-in at home. I myself don't know how to make games in any other programming languages. But there is an architect in Spain who creates some of the projects for Math Cats, and he has created a few new ones that I'll be posting soon. I'll ask him if he can turn some of the MicroWorlds projects into projects that don't need the plug-in. He is very clever, and I hope he can do it.
(In the meantime, I understand that the students are not allowed to download the plug-in, but maybe you can ask your math teacher to visit Math Cats from his or her home computer and try the activities and then consider if the school can download the plug-in.) Dear Prime Cat, I read your message ... As for now your website is going great at my school because I've told tons of people about it. I don't go through any pencils. Math Cats solve math problems by thinking about them in our heads. And sometimes we use a calculator if the problem is very very tough! Sometimes we like to draw a picture of a problem to help us understand it. But we live in cyberspace so we don't use pencils, we use a computer mouse.
The important thing about math in the real world is not so much how to go through steps to solve a problem: the important thing is understanding how to set up the problem in the first place - to know what information is important and whether the problem calls for multiplying or subtracting or whatever.

That's too bad. I'm sure you miss your cat. Did you have a little funeral for your cat? That can help. Or you can set up a little place outside, marked with a nice stone or plant, as a memorial to your cat. Talk about your cat with friends and family. Sometimes it helps to get a new cat, but you'll always remember your special cat who died. Math Cats is a math site, not a cat help site, but I hope this helps a little bit.

Math Cats is more for exploring math than for playing games. But there are some games for third grade. You need to download a free MW Web Player to use the games and other projects in the MicroWorlds section. Ask an adult to help you. The link to the download is on the project pages. There is a great multiplication game in that section called "Multiplication Grid." A lot of kids love "What a Crowd!" too, for estimating crowds of tiny people. In the Explore section you'll see a link for a couple of games that are good for 3rd grade, especially Long Line o' Cats.
Check the site map to see the age ranges for every project.

| 2/5/04. Dear Mathcats, I don't know how much I can thank you for making learning math fun!! On Boxermath all you do is solve the problems and go through tutorials and on mathcats you make it fun with the magic chalkboard. Your kitty's are so cute!!! I have some kitty's at home but they sure don't run a math website. When I got to math class at school and we're doing laptops I half to work on boxermath I try to get finished as early as posssilble but it takes a minute to get finished. I hurry on over to math cats to have some real fun! Also, I have a suggestion maybe you could do online timed multiplication tests that way teachers could use this site to give us a lot better way to learn!!! I LUV YOUR SITE!!!!!!

The Math Cats replied to say thanks and to point out that there is a very fun multiplication game in the MicroWorlds section of Math Cats called Multiplication Grid. (You need to download and install a free plug-in to use the games and activities in this section but they are very very fun!) The Multiplication Grid game lets you practice 100 facts any way you like, and it times you and tells you how many you've gotten right. Also see Interactive Multiplication Table (no plug-in needed) and links to other multiplication pages from there.

Well, one reason is that we are cats who love doing math. But here is the whole reason: Back in the spring of the year 2000, a teacher was getting ready to create a new math site for kids. She tried about 100 other website names that were already "taken" and she reserved four other names that were not very good... and then one day her husband said, "How about Math Cats?" (Who knows why??? He hates cats!) As soon as he said this, she imagined silly cats doing math, and the whole idea of Math Cats was born.

Lots of kids ask for more games at Math Cats. But Math Cats is not really a games site. There are plenty of other math sites for that. We would rather have fun exploring with math. It is harder to explore during a game.
But there are some games at Math Cats that are not listed on the games page. "What a Crowd!" and "Multiplication Grid" and "Using Money" are games (or anyhow, they are game-like explorations) in the MicroWorlds section. You need to download the free plug-in to use those projects. "Old Egyptian Math Cats Fractions" is sort of a game, too, if you try to find at least one solution for each of the problems listed. And you could invent your own game using the Math Cats Balance. Think about it!

Ah, that's a very good question! Actually there are games scattered around Math Cats, but it's true that we've not added any more games to the "Math Games at Math Cats" page since we posted the first two games there. We've also promised more math crafts, more string art patterns, more idea banks, more MicroWorlds projects... and we are also behind on sending out the prizes and certificates to the contest winners.
It's not that we are lazy cats! We are just so so busy having fun with math. And we end up spending most of our time working on new activities that are not official "games." We are getting ready to post some new activities very soon. It takes a long time to make good activities and to write clear explanations.
When we make math games we want them to help you think in new ways. We don't just make games to help you practice facts the way some math sites do.
Maybe we should just remove all of our promises, since "soon" sometimes seems to end up meaning "in a million math-cat years!"

The mousetrap activity is not actually a game. In fact, there is nothing to do but watch the mice fall and to think about the questions on the page. Maybe someday I can turn it into more of a game where you can control how many cat paws there are in each row, and how many rows, and see how the mice pile up in different ways. Right now the activity is just an introduction to the idea of a bell-shaped curve (a normal distribution curve). There are many many things in life that fit the bell-shaped curve, including things like the size of the feet of the kids in your class. There are big feet and medium feet and small feet. The most common size would be the medium-sized feet. There would be fewer kids with huge or tiny feet. If you made a graph to show the number of kids with each foot size, you would see a graph shaped a lot like the mouse trap.

I teach a class of 9 Life Skills students in a middle school -- ages 11 - 14, but developmentally anywhere from 18 months to perhaps 7. I am trying to teach them how to count by 5s -- no sense trying to learn how to tell time or count money unless you know the 5s. Any ideas? I appreciate any anad all ideas. Hi, thanks for writing. We are working on some activities for teenagers which we hope to post soon. But there are already quite a few activities at Math Cats which can be challenging for teens if you really explore them in depth. For instance, Old Egyptian Math Cats Fractions has lots and lots of problems to solve, and some of them are very very tough. That one project could possibly keep you busy for an hour or more. You can use the Math Cats Balance to create lots of interesting challenges for yourself. And you can try to figure out the weight of each object based on how it balances with other objects, and then check yourself with the pop-up windows. The math art projects (online activities and offline crafts) can be fun for all ages. The math writing contests can be stimulating too. We're just finishing one on inventing your own math craft. That is not baby stuff.
I hope this helps you get more out of Math Cats.

| 1/16/04 I train teachers, both pre and in-service, to use ICT in their classrooms especially for maths and science, elementary as well as high school. I try to introduce to them to as many sites possible on the Internet so that when they go back to their respective schools (after attending short courses at the college) they can look up these sites to aid them in their teaching. Moreover, for the past 20 years we have been teaching these subjects in the Malay language and only in 2003 have we started teaching in English. So it is hoped that the web will help these teachers master the content in English. I am from Malaysia, a small developing country in South East Asia. Thank you very much for your efforts in putting up Math Cats on the web as well as sharing your ideas with others. I notice that the Englsih is comfortable for my target teachers whose English is about elementary level! Thank you so much.

| 1/15/04 I love Math Cats dear Math cats I found your site through the city library. and I just love it! My kids haven't seen it yet, but I know this will help them out tremendously. We all love cats too. We have 2 maine coon cats named Tom and Jerry. When I was growing up i had 23 at one time. Anyway, your site is the best i've seen so far. | 1/14/04 Hi, I got to know about maths cat when I was busy searching for new ideas to teach my 10 year olds in school. This is my fourth year teaching this age group and I was just looking for fresh ideas to teach something that to me is becoming rather mundane. I found the ideas shared in mathcat very refreshing! I shared some of the ideas there with some friends and we found them great.

My name is Sue and I am starting a math club for my boys who are 6 and 7 years old (Kindergarten and second grade). We will be inviting friends over to have some fun with math. I found your site by searching for elementary math club I think. I was hoping to get some ideas for our club. We plan on playing chess and cribbage and board games and I will also be incorporating some ideas from your site. Thanks for providing it. I look forward to your newsletters. To all you kids out there don't get the wrong idea about math it may be boring but it will become fun! I'm 13 and go to school at north branch middle school and it's pretty fun so enjoy math! | 1/10/04 dear mathcats your website is awsome everyone who does it loves no kinding even my friend loves it. i found this website looking for cat pictures now i just love it. when i used to go on the computter i played games that my mom really did not want me to do because i was on the computter for hours now i show my mom this website and she is so glad i found something for learning. now on monday i'll tell my math tech about this. plus my mom was so glad because i was having a hard time in math to doing divion. plus my dad to. thankyou so much now i'll show my older sister plus my 3rd grade friends on monday. thankyou for teching me this and thankyou for making my parent happy. e-mail me if new things come up. bigest fan p.s i have 2 smart cats at home (like you) one of them is named arter my nick name my gramma gave me + dad. thanxs so much for helping me.

Hey I got a 2 year old cat named Jack and a 1 year old cat named Bubu And a new born named Zinky and Zinky's Mom BC (black Cat) and boy cat named Rose we thought it was a girl but after he got used to the name Rose we found out it was a boy and a girl named Callie the Calico so i have 6 cats. And My Room Room Is In CATS! you can name any thing of mine and it will be in cats.

| 1/5/04 I learned about Math Cats from a friend. I am a teacher and have taught for 41 years! I teach 6th grade math and science in a middle school. I also conduct workshops for teachers of grades 1-8 so I am interested in many areas of math! Good luck in your endeavor! It is a great site!

I'm a Title 1 family involvement coordinator, and I use your ideas for family programs.
Examples: Read Any Good math Lately - families read a book with a math concept and do a related activity, Make It & Take It Math Games. Mostly K-5, but some preschool and middle. Love your site!

I sent a story about my cats to your site and I hope everyone likes it. I just love cats and that's why I love your site. Plus I love the games and and the stories about other peoples cats. I like the different ways to learn math. I have a C average in math and I think if I keep this website to my favorites I will learn to love math.

| 1/4/04 Hello, thanks for having such a great website. I am a homeschooling mom who found your website through another homeschooling site - although at this point I don't remember how/when I did find it. Although my children are young (3 and 5), we are doing Kindergarten and 2nd grade math. But most of our "math" program is talking about it. We like to sit round the dinner table and discuss things like the infinate and try to come up with questions we (meaning me, lol) can't answer. The boys LOVE to come up with ones like that!!! Other than that, we are using the Miquon Workbooks, as well as the classroom set of Cuisaire rods. The boys like to make up long problems for me to solve and check to see if I'm right. I have found this easier for them to start asking me to solve problems then have them solve some that I come up with. However, the downside is that they ask the impossible - once they asked me to count backwards from ONE BILLION!!! I actually complied for a thousand numbers over a course of a week then said that was it - no more. They are still laughing over it. Once again, thanks!!
